How to Properly Hold a Chef’s Knife

A chef’s knife should be your go-to knife in the kitchen. In order to chop, dice, and mince efficiently, you need to know how to properly hold a chef’s knife.

A good knife grip allows you to better control the knife and make even cuts while working faster. Holding a knife correctly will also place less strain on your hand and arm.

In this video, we demonstrate a proper knife hold and where to position your fingers. We also point out a very common and potentially dangerous mistake that many home cooks make. It will take time to get used to the correct grip if it’s different than what you’re used to, but once you get the hang of it, we promise that you will notice a difference in your chopping efficiency!

Once you have learned the right way to hold a chef’s knife, put your new skill to practice by cutting an onion, mincing some garlic, or dicing a potato.

Then head over to our recipes page to make delicious dishes with your new skills! Our stovetop dried beans, roasted potatoes, carrots, and onions, and one pan Mexican quinoa skillet recipes all require efficient knife skills.
