How to Cook Brown Rice on the Stovetop

Having trouble getting the texture of your brown rice just right? No one likes mushy or gummy brown rice, and this video demonstrates how to cook perfect, fluffy brown rice every time!

Cooking brown rice on the stovetop is simple with just a few easy steps.

Some key tips include using the correct water-to-rice ratio, proper cooking time, and not stirring during cooking.

Brown Rice Cooking Variations

  • Use chicken or veggie broth in place of water
  • Cook with different types of brown rice: short grain, medium grain, long grain, Jasmine, or Basmati
  • Toast the grains before cooking. Add the rice to the pot, turn the heat to medium, and leave over the heat, tossing occasionally, until the rice smells toasty and nutty. At that point, you can add the water. Be careful of splashes – the rice and pan are hot!

Once your rice is cooked, make an easy brown rice recipe like a healthy grain bowl or a lentil curry with brown rice. Next, learn how to cook quinoa on the stovetop – another healthy whole grain that makes a great base to any dish!
